Engaging Traditional Leaders to Prevent Violence Against Women in Elections in Nkhatabay District

As part of the Political Empowerment for Women project in Malawi, the NGO Gender Coordination Network, with support from UN Women through the Malawi Electoral Support Project (MESP) Basket Fund, is conducting engagement meetings with Traditional Leaders. The goal of these meetings is to gain support for the prevention of violence against women during elections. These sessions are currently taking place in Nkhatabay district.

According to NGO Gender Coordination Network Chair Person Maggie Kathewera Banda, NGO-GCN seeks Traditional Authorities support in ensuring that more women are participating in the current electoral process and other pertinent issues regarding women empowerment even after the elections.

“We would like to collaborate with various TAs to promote increased participation of women in political positions”, elaborated Banda.

This project kicked off in November 2024 and is expected to be completed in October 2025, running in the districts of Phalombe, Balaka, Ntchisi and Nkhata Bay
